CHEPD - Critical Conversation Series
I presented on behalf of the Centre for Higher Education Professional Development (CHEPD) on Wednesday, 14 August 2024 in Potchefstroom (South Africa). My talk delved into the evolving role of the academy, the nature of contemporary students, and the importance of reorienting academia to better serve society. I discussed how higher education must shift to become more student-centric, emphasizing the integration of experiential learning, the importance of supporting holistic well-being, and the need to align education with real-world challenges. Drawing inspiration from C.S. Lewis’s idea that students, like young knights, must be equipped to face the 'cruel enemies' of life, I showcased my use of game-based learning to foster resilience, creativity, and courage in students. This approach meets students where they are, engaging them in dynamic environments that mirror the complexities they will encounter beyond the classroom. I also highlighted how contemporary students expect flexible learning options, robust support systems, and education that prepares them for a rapidly changing world. Through examples from my own teaching practices, particularly in online settings for larger classes, I demonstrated how these principles can be effectively implemented in higher education.
Overall, my presentation emphasized the need for academia to adapt and thrive in today’s world by focusing on the holistic development of students, fostering critical and creative thinking, and ensuring that learning is deeply connected to both personal growth and societal impact.
I learned that while people generally favour game-based learning and creative approaches to teaching, many academics and support staff are hesitant to explore new or unfamiliar methods.
