ABOUT
ABOUT
From sketching "Final Fantasy" characters in a notepad at age seven, nurtured by my family's ambition and intelligence, to building a career that blends academia with graphic design, my journey has been anything but ordinary. While architecture once called to me, I ultimately found my true passion in design and illustration. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies from North-West University in 2011, specialising in design to craft my unique aesthetic. During my studies, I gained hands-on experience at Academic Development and Support (ADS), where I designed e-learning materials and contributed to the creation of a self-service video recording studio on campus.
I ventured into academia in 2017, joining the School of Computer Science and Information Systems as a lecturer. My academic journey continued with an MSc in Computer Science and Information Systems, which I completed with distinction in 2020, followed by a PhD in Information Technology in 2023. My research interests include Serious Game Design, Ludic Theory in Higher Education, and Social Capital, among others.
Outside the lecture hall, I offer freelance graphic design services to clients such as Omnia Fertilizer and ESS Holdings Ltd. in the SHERQ Services sector. I am passionate about continually pushing the boundaries of graphic design and illustration.

MY MENTORS
A number of influential people have shaped me and my professional career. Below are my takeaways from their teachings:
-
Naomi taught me to never take life too seriously and to stay true to myself, no matter where I go. Her zest for life and free-flowing attitude left a lasting impression on me during my undergraduate Communication studies.
-
Steph, my graphic design lecturer during my undergraduate Communication degree studies, recognised my eye for design and nurtured my creative side. He inspired me to refine my craft and assured me that it's okay to embrace and enjoy my collection of nerdy paraphernalia.
-
Dr. Marieta, my first line manager during my time as an e-learning designer at Academic Development and Support, taught me the importance of working methodically and always triple-checking items for quality before sharing them with others. Her tough love approach helped me become more resilient and matured in my pursuit of graphic design.
-
Dr. Strydom, my big boss during my time at ADS, exemplified true leadership through her quiet yet powerful presence and discipline-oriented guidance. She led with grace and dignity, showing me the essence of effective leadership.
-
Seugnet, my first line manager when I transitioned to the School of Computer Science and Information Systems at NWU, taught me invaluable lessons: I can handle more than I think, carry myself as a professional, and embrace both my creativity and capability. One of her quotes during a 2017 trip to Cyprus has always stuck with me: "Be good to you. Be good to me. Be good to this place."
-
Professor Japie Greeff taught me invaluable lessons during our time together. He showed me that it’s okay to be unapologetically yourself, even in a professional setting. His blunt and crass manner was remarkably effective in delivering his message. His intellect inspired me to aim higher and pursue knowledge with determination, and his passion and energy left a lasting impact on me.
