BELGIUM CAMPUS MASTERCLASS: Minds Made Manifest - IP in Practice

On 23 July 2025, I presented a masterclass on behalf of Belgium Campus iTversity focused on intellectual property (IP) in higher education. I walked students and staff through what IP is, why it matters in academia, and how it’s handled in South Africa—drawing on examples from projects I’ve been a part of on like CiteSaga, Dogs of War, and Prosper. We unpacked key types of IP—patents, copyright, trademarks, designs, and know-how—and explored the systems in place at public institutions like NWU, as well as the more flexible IP landscape at Belgium Campus. The session aimed to offer practical insight into how creators can protect their work, navigate institutional policies, and avoid common missteps.
